Vision ~ That every member of our global society be given the skills to create health – emotional, physical, mental, and spiritual – so that they can achieve their life’s potential and contribute to world peace.
Our Mission ~ The mission of Satellite Yoga is to bring the science and art of yoga modalities* to populations who have been displaced from their homes, or their hearts, by acts of violence – people in prisons, women's and children’s shelters, homeless shelters, rehab centers, group homes and transitional facilities and at risk youth. Our goals are to educate yoga teachers on the need for this type of teaching and on the skills required, and to secure funding (through community involvement) for the teachers’ compensation.
*Yoga modalities include all the components of a yoga lifestyle: asana, pranayama, meditation, ayurvedic treatments, nutrition, and knowledge of yamas and niyamas. Essentially, skills that help a person feel empowered to take charge of their life.
Our Goals ~ It has recently become very clear that I want to bring yoga to populations who have been displaced from their homes, or their hearts, by acts of violence - to people in prisons, women and children’s shelters, homeless shelters and rehab centers: to the refugee camps of our own back yard. My goals are to educate yoga teachers on the need and rewards of this type of teaching, to develop in them the compassion and skills to teach outside the yoga studio, and to secure funding for these programs. This paper illustrates some of the current work being done in this field, how yoga techniques are being applied to help individuals in distress and how yoga teachers and therapists are becoming inspired to “teach yoga in difficult places.”
We are modeling our programs after a village-type model where the community works because there is an exchange of services. Spiritual teacher and healers are supported by the whole community and in turn they give there time to those in need. |
