VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: Nancy Candea, EYRT, CYT

For Nancy Candea, passion comes from life and its challenges. As a yoga therapist, teacher and director of Satellite Yoga, Nancy lives by the five points of yoga: exercise, nutrition, relaxation, positive thoughts and following life's bliss. Yoga therapy is past the Asana work of daily practice, using the Yoga writings to help find what is off-balance and discover non-violence and truthfulness.

These principles are what she shares with her students, along with teaching alternatives and decision-making because "clear heads make good choices," says Nancy. One goal of her program for healing is to increase the time responding to issues rather than the time reacting to them, through wisdom and opening the heart. Nancy is currently teaching yoga classes at the SPAN Shelter and Resource Center. Yoga poses are taught but she also takes time to work with each woman and is attuned to the needs of each resident. Women at the SPAN Shelter get compassionate, individual attention from Nancy, allowing woman to work on her own goals during a yoga session. Be it a physical, emotional or spiritual manifestation of pain, or a combination of those things, Nancy can help each woman learn to trust herself again - yoga as therapy.

In addition to her work with women at the SPAN Shelter and Resource Center, Nancy was the facilitator of Recover, Rejuvenate, Redefine: The Transforming Power of the Yoga Lifestyle on June 24 at the SPAN Outreach Center. This program focused on the practice of techniques for relaxation, including meditation, breathing exercises and 'chair yoga'. Satellite Yoga is a not-for-profit organization that brings the science and art of yoga to underserved populations. It is designed to filter resources to the community, creating a healthier community with a spiritual connection. She also trains yoga teachers through the Boundless Yoga Center, LLC, a Yoga Alliance Registered Yoga School. Besides teaching yoga classes, Nancy teaches yoga in schools, the Boulder County Jail and the Brookdale retirement community. Please visit www.nancycandea.com for more information.

"Yoga principles remind us of the timeless cross-cultural wisdom that stabilizes our health, and empowers us to reach for our personal potential. By applying these universal teachings, including ahimsa (non violence), satya (truthfulness), metta (loving-kindness) and karma (service), we can transform mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually. Yoga also teaches us how our choices concerning nutrition and exercise enhance a deep mind-body connection, as well as cultivating mental relaxation."
