Satellite Yoga is a not-for-profit organization
that brings the science and art of yoga to populations
that have been displaced from their homes, or their hearts, by acts
of violence – to people in prison, homeless shelters, women's
and children's shelters, rehab centers, group homes and transitional
facilities, and to at-risk youth. Our goals are to educate yoga
teachers on the need for this type of teaching and on the skills
required, and to secure funding (through community involvement)
for the teachers' compensation.

Satellite Yoga had its wellspring in the yoga outreach work of Nancy
Candea, ERYT, a Certified Yoga Therapist and director of the Boundless
Yoga Center, a Yoga Alliance Registered Yoga School. Having studied
yoga's capacity to aid in addiction recovery, moderate the effects
of trauma, and plant the seeds of self-transformation, Nancy put
her yoga practice to work in Colorado for the Boulder community.
She taught yoga at the Safehouse women's shelter, Boulder County
Jail, and the Brookdale retirement community.
Satellite Yoga builds on this model of service, taking yoga
out of the studio and into the refugee camps of our own back yards.
For yoga teachers and practitioners, Satellite Yoga is a means to
sharpen our treatment skills and to expand our yoga lifestyle through
service to the whole community, and so play our part in the maturation
of yoga in the West.
